Pond Heaters
Keeping a fish pond at a good temperature will keep your fish happy and active in the winter time. Pond heaters come in all kinds of different forms, but most of them work very well at keeping your fish healthy even in cool temperatures. There are four main kinds of pond heaters that we will discuss here. They are geothermal, solar, electric and floating. They each have their merits and your own specific needs will determine the one you will choose.
Geothermal Pond Heaters
A geothermal heat pump pond relies on the heat of the earth to keep itself at a comfortable temperature for fish. The ground changes temperature much more slowly than the air. The earth actually has a heat of its own. If you need an outdoor pond heater, the geothermal heat pump is relatively inexpensive and efficient. If, however, you live in a climate that keeps temperatures well below freezing for extended amounts of time, you will need to choose from some other kinds of pond heaters.
Solar Pond Heaters
Solar pond heaters require a larger initial investment than some other heaters, but they are very inexpensive to run. Since they rely on the sun’s energy, there are no electricity costs to you. Pond heaters that work with the rays of the sun require areas of intense and frequent sunlight. Living in cloud cover will not be ideal for this kind of heater.
Electric Pond Heaters
Electricity has the benefit of being totally reliable and predictable, as long as the power doesn’t go out. Electric koi pond heaters are great because they can be adjusted to precise temperatures to meet your kois’ needs. A koi pond heater or other specific fish pond heaters will probably do the best job at maintaining healthy temperatures for fish.
Floating Pond Heaters
Floating pond heaters are most generally electric. The benefit to a floating pond heater is that it is ideal for climates that are susceptible to freezing temperatures. Since ice floats, a pond heater that floats will keep ice from forming. A fish pond heater that keeps ice off of the pond is a valuable thing in many areas of the country.
If you have a fish pond and heaters are on your shopping list, there are definitely some options for you to consider. Heaters for ponds come in various forms and perform with varying strengths and weaknesses. Big fish pond heaters are different from regular pond heaters.
